When you need to warm up...
It's been a long week. The kids are both sick, and after a brief reprieve from the cold, we're back to frigid temperatures. By the time thursday rolled around, we were all in need of some fresh air and sunshine. Since it's too cold for most outdoor activities, coupled with the fact that I wouldn't want to take sick kids outside, I remembered a little sunny oasis. The Assiniboine Park Conservatory is open daily, and offers a wonderful break from the cold. It's free to get in, although donations are welcomed.
The kids were happy to rid themselves of their bulky winter jackets, and we spent a good 45 minutes or so looking at the flowers, turtles, and massive koi fish. Next time I will have to remember to bring snacks. I saw a few people sitting on benches, eating their lunch or reading, and it looked so peaceful and relaxing.
The groundhog is calling for six more weeks of winter, and while we do love our winter activities, sometimes you just need warmth and greenery. As most of the greenhouses are closed, I have a feeling we'll be visiting the conservatory again before the snow is off the ground.
