Blogging and Butterflys

This blog is not dead... even though it may seem like it lately. There are just not enough hours in the day! I feel like I am always a bit behind in things, be it laundry, cooking, blogging, and just life in general. I need to have an organizational bootcamp, I think, and whip myself into shape. I function a lot better when I have schedules, and lists, and meal plans, and summer is not really the time for that. While I love leisurely days exploring with my little family, I also crave a little more structure.

With Soren starting real school in a couple of short weeks, I think we are going to get a lot of structure. His bus schedule arrived yesterday, and he will be picked up at exactly 7:47 each weekday morning. It's hard to believe that he is old enough to take a bus to school...

This past sunday we woke up to a cooler day and decided to take a trip to the zoo. We spent some time at the butterfly garden, and the kids worked on some crafts. Soren created a beautiful ring, while Poppy coloured away and tried on some stick on earrings. Speaking of which, when is a good age to get girls ears pierced? At one point I had thought we would do it when Poppy was a baby... but now I'm kind of thinking four or five might be a better age? I imagine that a four or five year old would be SO excited to get their ears pierced. When I was little I had to wait until I was eight, which I thought was way too old. It seemed like every girl in my class had pierced ears, except me. We will see - those little ears would look pretty cute with earrings!

Hope you don't mind me leaving a comment, but I pierced Sandi at about this age and she did fine. She was 20 months old.

Whenever, she saw my earrings, she wanted them too holding them up to her ears and saying "earwigs." Like you, after she was born, I was unsure when to do it and even thought of doing it as a baby. However, after seeing her precious, tiny, perfect ears. The idea of piercing this beautiful little babies ears all of the sudden seemed like something I could NOT do. How could I hurt my little baby?

Fast forward to 20 months...I was worried about doing our toddler, and called our pediatrician. To my surprise, she actually encouraged me saying it was best when mommy could care for them for a couple of reasons: 1) little girls at 3-5 want them seeing others, but fail to care for them, 2) under 2, she won't remember having them done, 3) once cared for properly by mom, she'll just grow up with them thinking they are a natural part of her. As she handed me a copy of "Suggestions for moms having their daughter's ears pierced," I was convinced!

She is 2.5 years old now and it is so precious when she says "ooooooh mommy... I pretty!" whenever I get her a new pair. She didn't even cry when she had them done.

After seeing her with sticker earrings, you already know how cute she'd look and sounds like your mommy intuition is telling you now is best in your blog post,"...those little ears would look pretty
cute with earrings! " I think little girls with earrings are adorable. It celebrates their femininity and femaleness. After all, they are little girls.

We took Sandi to Caryl Baker who specializes in infant and piercing of ears for little girls. The info from our ped helped me decide on a person, place, what type of earrings and OTC med's to minimize any discomfort. If you or other moms would like any of our ped’s tips, then don’t hesitate to write me an e-mail since our ped's info.
