Checking the price tags / Playing Cinderella

6/08/2014

I've mentioned before that we don't have a ton of money right now. I constantly find myself checking prices - comparing yogurts in the grocery store, trying to get more miles out of a tank of gas, and using cloth diapers more frequently. Sometimes I dream about going to the grocery store and just throwing things in the cart - without so much as a thought to what they cost. So when I shop for new clothes (something that is definitely not a priority right now), I'm always looking for a deal.

It's a busy summer of weddings for us this year, and one is for my brother-in-law. My mother-in-law is a great shopper, and she graciously offered to take me shopping to pick out a new outfit to wear to the wedding. On Saturday afternoon Poppy and I joined her for a day of shopping, along with my two sister-in-laws. I seriously felt like I was in a fairy tale, as we all tried on dress after beautiful dress, with no thoughts of price tags or budgeting. At the end of the day we all came away with a couple of gorgeous new outfits, including miss Poppy!

I read an article quite a while back, about a very small charity in New York City that took kids to pick out a brand new pair of designer shoes. While some critics pointed out that the kids could get a months worth of groceries for the price of one pair of shoes, that really wasn't the point. The kids were SO EXCITED to go into a real store (not a thrift store) and pick out something brand new, with no regards to cost. Many of the kids said it was the only time they had ever picked out something new, just for them.

While I'm definitely not comparing myself to the underprivileged kids in the story, I can see how exciting it must have been for them to go shoe shopping. There is a time for thriftiness, and I'm glad (sort of) that we don't have millions of dollars and do understand the importance of saving money. But if you have the chance, it's really fun to relax and buy something beautiful just because. I thank my mother-in-law for a very fun shopping experience, one that I will remember for a long time. I got this dress which I think will be a perfect addition to my wardrobe… and I can't wait to wear it!
